Whether you’re using Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, ESPN+, or any other streaming service, there’s no denying that it’s frustrating if the video you’re watching starts slowing down. If it’s not pausing every time, it is also possible that the video quality becomes pixelated. If you’ve experienced these problems, here are ways on how you can speed up your streaming services.
Check with Your Speed
The first thing that you have to do is to check the speed of your internet connection. You can use the Ookla speed test to see if you have the proper speed for streaming HD videos.
So what’s a good WiFi speed? If it’s for checking email and browsing, 1-5 Mbps will do. However, if you’re trying to stream HD videos, you want to have a speed of 15-25 Mbps. Now, if you’re playing online games while streaming 4K videos, you will need to have 40-100 Mbps.
Call Your Internet Service Provider
If your subscription is at least 15 Mbps and you’re not getting the desired speed, then it’s a good idea to call your internet service provider. There’s a chance that they’re having maintenance in your area or perhaps, they even have to restart your modem from their end. At times, restarting your router can also do the trick.
Perhaps, you might also consider upgrading your subscription if you’re doing games and streaming at the same time.
Reboot the App
Another simple but effective solution to speed up streaming services is to reboot your app. If you’re watching on your TV, turn the device off for a minute, and then turn it back on. There are instances when this could solve the problem and you could enjoy watching your favorite movie or series without any issues. You’d be surprised that this works in most apps. At times, you also need to make sure that the app is running on its updated version.
Close Other Apps
Aside from restarting the streaming app, you might also want to consider closing other apps that are running on your tab or phone’s background.
Switch to 5 GHz
Next, you should check your router. Try to check if your router is using 2.4 GHz. What it means is that you can connect farther away from the modem/router, but the connection will be slower. 5 GHz frequency, on the other hand, requires your device to be closer to the router; however, you get a better streaming experience.Good thing is that modern routers now have two frequencies. You can connect on either 5 GHz or 2 GHz.
Remove Temporary Files and Cache
If you’re watching on your laptop and streaming via a web browser, it’s a good idea to clear the cache and history and also remove temporary files. If you’re using Google Chrome, go to settings, and head to advanced settings.
Download the Content
A good way to enjoy watching without any lag is to download the content and then watch it offline. This means that if your internet speed isn’t suited for streaming, you don’t have to worry about this problem anymore.
Turn off your VPN
Some Netflix subscribers install private internet access VPN on Windows to get access to other geo-blocked content on the platform’s library. Though it is a good way to gain access to content in other locations, VPNs also tend to slow down your Wi-Fi speed.
If you have your VPN turned on, you can expect the internet speed to slow down by 50% or more. A good way to fix the problem is by turning off your VPN and just watch what’s available in your location. If not, you can just download the content while the VPN is turned on and then watch the movie or series offline.
Choose Different Servers
If you’re insistent on streaming with your VPN turned on, you can still get a fast WiFi connection if you choose a server that isn’t overloaded. However, this means trying different ones and then running a speed test to see which one gives you the best speed. It’s a trial-and-error process that may take some time.
A wired connection usually gives a faster internet speed than WiFi. If you have several devices connected to your WiFi, resorting to a wired connection could allow you to stream without any issues. But of course, the catch is to either have a long cable if your modem is in the other room, or you will need to have the modem close to your device.
Watch During Non-Peak Hours
Ever wondered why you’re not having any internet problems at midnight? That’s because internet usage usually peaks at around 7 PM until 11 PM according to the FCC. Watch at noon and maybe you won’t have a problem with your viewing experience.
There are several reasons why you can’t watch continuously on your streaming app. Try to diagnose the problem if it originates from your internet service provider, modem, or even because of the VPN you’re using. From there, try these tips and see which one works best for you.
